Jackson County - Wonderful Waterfalls
Waterfalls are a key geographic feature of Jackson County. The county is
home to dozens of spectacular falls, including the highest waterfall
east of the Rockies – the 411-foot Whitewater Falls near Cashiers.
The Jackson County Visitors Guide includes a map to 19 beautiful
waterfalls throughout the county, while the Cashiers Chamber of Commerce
provides an audio-taped self-guided tour of waterfalls in the Cashiers
area, complete with map and description.

Directions to Whitewater Falls:
(1). From Cashiers, drive south on N.C. Highway 107 for 9.3 miles.
(2). Just after crossing into South Carolina, turn left at the sign for
Whitewater Falls.
(There is also a sign directing people to S.C. Highway 130)
(3). Proceed 2.3 miles to the intersection of S.C. Highway 130 and turn
left.
(This becomes N.C. Highway 281 at the North Carolina state line)
(4). Once back in North Carolina, you'll see a sign for the entrance to
Whitewater Falls.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Jackson County serves as the eastern gateway to the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park, which attracts the most visitors annually of
any national park. The 800-square-mile park, shared by North Carolina
and Tennessee, is considered one of the most ecologically diverse of the
parks in the national system.
The Great Smoky Mountains get their unusual name from the mist-like blue
haze that often covers the peaks. This haze is produced by the moist
environment of streams and waterfalls interacting with the thick
vegetation. The Cherokee name for the area, Shaconage, means “place of
blue smoke.”
The park provides many of the highest peaks in the Eastern U.S., with 16
mountains exceeding 6,000 feet. The Cherokee Indians were the earliest
settlers in the Great Smokies.
Hiking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, camping and rock climbing are very
popular in the park, which is also the only one in the national system
that does not charge an entrance fee.

Cashiers North Carolina is in a great corner of southwestern North
Carolina, a green valley 3,500 feet high surrounded by mountains
rising up to 5,000 feet. Cashiers NC is not in the foothills, but
the southern crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
North
Carolina Highway 107 takes you north and south through the
Cashiers NC area. U.S. Highway 64 takes you east and west. But
it's the less traveled roads, like Whiteside Cove Road and Bull
Pen Road, that take you through the mountains to the beautiful
places...where you learn to know the craggy stone faces of Yellow
Mountain, Rock Mountain, Chimney Top, and Whiteside...where you
hear the thunder of the tallest waterfall in the Eastern United
States... and where, from The Overlook, you see mountains upon
mountains.
The
pace of life in
Cashiers NC is such that you can do some things you seldom have
time to do. Sit by a rushing creek basking in the warmth of the
sun on your back. Amble along a trail, stopping often to admire a
wildflower or to look up into a tree to find that elusive bird
that is singing to you. Take a leisurely ramble in your car,
exploring, finding grand mountain views, weathered barns, tiny
towns that are nothing more than a filling station and a post
office.

Lake Glenville North Carolina
Lake Glenville, at an elevation of 3500 feet MSL, is the highest lake
east of the Mississippi and one of the 10 most beautiful lakes in
America. Lake Glenville
is 4.5 miles long, covering 1470 acres, has 26 miles of shoreline, and
has a maximum depth of 125 feet. Hurricane, Norton, Mill, Cedar and Pine
Creeks feed
Lake Glenville and are the head waters of the west fork of the
Tuckasegee River.
